In the summer, fleas are lurking everywhere and unfortunately, our furry pals will encounter them at some point. Luckily, there are many different products that can prevent and eliminate these horrible pests. Before purchasing a remedy that gets rid of fleas, it is important to understand the differences between each one.

Frontline
Frontline applications kill fleas and ticks at every stage of their life. All fleas and ticks will be killed between 24-48 hours after application. To apply Frontline, all you have to do is part a coat of fur between the shoulder blades of your dog. Then, squeeze the product on the exposed skin. It is that easy! However, it is important that you remember to apply the application each month because it only fights against the parasites for 30 days. It’s also important not to bathe your dog until 48 hours after application!

Comfortis
Comfortis is a flavored chewable tablet that starts killing fleas in as little as 30 minutes! Give your dog the tablet one a month in order to kill all active fleas and prevent future infestation. But take note, this is a product that does not kill eggs. The Comfortis tablet is an alternative to Frontline if your dog has skin sensitivities to the application.

Seresto Flea & Tick Collar
The Seresto Flea & Tick Collar is an easy to use collar that provides flea and tick protection for eight months. The Seresto collar is the perfect alternative to those who often forget monthly applications. Two active ingredients, Flumethrin and Imidcloprid, are released from the collar to protect your furry pup from any dangerous parasites. The odorless, water-resistant collar kills fleas. In addition, it kills and repels ticks before attaching to your dog and transmitting an organism that may do more danger the initial flea and tick itself. Keep in mind, the Seresto collar only protects against live fleas and ticks. Therefore, any eggs that have been laid and have not hatched will not be treated.

Flea & Tick Shampoo Treatments
Flea shampoo is best for infected dogs – not as a preventative measure. Do your research on the different types of flea shampoos available because some will kill fleas at all points of their lifecycle and others only kill adult fleas.  Some flea shampoos use essential oils like clove and cedarwood (similar to the one we use at Fitdog) while others use chemical treatments. Regardless of the type, it is important to work the shampoo into your dog’s hair and let it sit for at least 10 minutes to effectively kill the fleas.

Essential Oils
Not a fan of all the chemicals? Essential oils are a safe and effective way to treat and prevent fleas and ticks. At Fitdog, we are in love Mauro Petcare Products, which use a unique blend of essential oils to treat everything from hot spots, dry and itchy skin to fleas & ticks. The Mauro Pest Repellant & Dry Shampoo uses a combination of peppermint, cedar and clove oil to ward off fleas before they have become established. Just rub into their skin weekly. There are also anti-flea and tick shampoos. Mauro’s Essential Elements Shampoos: Flea & Tick Formula uses a special combination of lavender, lemongrass, and cedar wood to ward off fleas and ticks.  These preventative measures help make sure your dog never gets fleas in the first place! But remember, they are not meant for dogs who are already infested with fleas.

Now that you are aware of the different types of flea products, you are able to choose the one that is best for you and your furry best friend!
