We all know how difficult it can be potty training your pup! It’s easy to get discouraged, or even want to give up! But, don’t! Here are some tips to help you get through potty training.

Don’t panic if pups regress in their training
Everyone goes through it. Remember you are dealing with the equivalent of a two-year-old child. It could be a good long while before your puppy is completely reliable. There’s nothing more you can do but be patient and kind. And keep lots of cleaner handy.

Notice the signs and be quick on your feet
Your pup will let you know when they need to go. Pay attention to the signs. If a puppy starts sniffing, circling or pawing, that means they have to go. If they start going in the house and you catch them, just whisk them outside to finish their business so they know that’s the right place to go.

Never “punish” them
Never punish a puppy for a potty accident. They won’t understand why you’re rubbing their nose in a mess. All this teaches the puppy is that their mess makes you angry and that you are mean when angry. This could cause them to lash out or start eating it to hide any accidents from you.

You aren’t alone
What’s most important is to remember that everyone goes through this! Potty training pups takes time (and a whole of patience!). Be there to love your pup through all the accidents. Eventually, you will be successful in training, and your dog will officially be potty trained!
