We were so excited to find out that November 17th is National Take a Hike Day, or as we like to call it, National Take a Hike With Your Dog Day. Hiking was one of the first parts of our sports program because of the way it stimulates dogs, encourages exploration, and reduces stress. In honor of this day, we talked to Sports Leaders Cynthia and Chris to find out what it's like to hike dogs for a living and highlighted some of our favorite moments of the year. Why we hike Living in Los Angeles as we do, we...Read More
It might be easy to get into the Halloween spirit if you live in a place that has a traditional autumn. We're talking changing leaves, scarves and gloves, shorter days, and chillier nights. For those of us who live in Southern California, beautiful as it may be, we need more prompting to get into the groove. So we've compiled a list of all the cool things happening around Southern California (and beyond!) that will get you in a spooky mood! It's that time of year, folks. We get to go all out dressing up our dogs and nobody can judge us, because, well, all the cool kids are doing it! Here at Fitdog, we get really excited about Halloween Howl-o-ween, so we've searched the web for some of our favorite costumes. Although it was nearly impossible to narrow down, we've chosen five of our favorites: Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! Who's not a sucker for some '80s nostalgia? As this film comes up on its 30th anniversary of release, we'd love to see some of these suave zombies strutting their stuff. This is a perfect costume for...Read More
A dog surf competition sounds incredible, right? And it was.
The McKenna Subaru Annual Surf City Surf Dog Competition® has been happening for nine years. To put that in perspective, it started before most of their competitors were even born. Every year, thousands of people gather at the Huntington Dog Beach to attend this free event, whether their dogs are surfing or not. There were a ton of community partners involved, such as Westie Rescue of Orange County and OC SPCA, as well as some of our favorite doggie brands, like Outward Hound!
This was the first time Fitdog was part of the event and had ever witnessed a live surf dog competition. What we found most interesting was that it was really hard to see the dogs surfing as every dog was surrounded by a sea of handlers. This got us wondering: how do you assure a dog’s safety with a sport as treacherous as surfing?
We talked to Dan Nykolayko, handler of Cherie the Surfing Frenchie (check out her Instagram here) about the safety precautions he takes for his dog, “most importantly, she never goes in the water without a life vest.” All of the dogs competing were required to wear life vests plus were closely watched by handlers and lifeguards as they rode in on the waves.
Despite having a bad wipeout at the beach last year, Dana Smolinski’s dog, Major, was back in the ranks to compete at this year’s event. She said the key to rehabilitating her pup was “not to coerce him into it. Especially recovering from the wipeout, we just build up slowly… He really lets you know when he wants to go out.” Taking it slowly and letting the dog lead was a common theme among the surf dog handlers. Dogs should never be forced to participate in any activity.
The surf competition was a day full of fun and excitement, but it was truly through the efforts of the handlers and lifeguards on duty that this event was safe and successful. Thanks to the participants and the partners of Huntington Beach Dog Beach, surfing is definitely a legitimate sport!

We love hiking, camping, and enjoying the outdoors with our dogs. As the weather warms up, and we are outside more with our dogs, we need to be mindful of rattlesnakes! Dogs’ instincts tell them to approach snakes, but it is an owner's responsibility to keep their dog out of harm's way. Rattlesnakes are known to be most active in warmer weather. From April to September, they can be encountered at any point when in their natural habitat, which includes beach areas, the foothills, mountains, canyons, deserts, and even some urban surroundings. Once bitten, snake venom, a sophisticated mixture of...Read More
